Article : CONTRIBUTION OF ANGANWADI CENTRES TO EARLY CHILDHOOD CARE AND EDUCATION (ECCE): A STUDY

Abstract : This research aimed to investigate the role of Anganwadi Centres in Early Childhood Care and Education within Mawkyrwat Block, located in the South West Khasi Hills District of Meghalaya. The investigation utilized a descriptive research approach. The study population included 146 Anganwadi Centres operating under the ICDS initiative in the designated area. A total of 50 Anganwadi Centres were chosen through convenience sampling, and information was gathered from 100 participants, which comprised 50 Anganwadi workers and 50 parents, via structured questionnaires. The gathered information was analyzed utilizing the percentage method. Results indicated that Anganwadi Centres are significant in delivering preschool education through learning driven by activities, such as storytelling, singing, drawing, and both indoor and outdoor play, which promote overall child development. Furthermore, these centres offer supplementary nutrition, conduct health assessments, monitor growth, and provide hygiene related services that enhance children’s health and wellness. A majority of parents expressed contentment with the operations of the centres and noted favourable developments in their children’s learning abilities, communication skills, confidence, and social behaviours. The study concludes that Anganwadi Centres significantly impact Early Childhood Care and Education in the examined area. Improving infrastructure, securing sufficient teaching materials, offering regular training to Anganwadi workers, and fostering increased parental involvement would greatly improve the quality and efficiency of ECCE services.
